A Gym-Tastic Party, with a Side of Nostalgia

Next-Door friend Miss R's 7th birthday (older siblings welcome)

We used to come here for a 'sibling-and-me' gym class when Ander was 5 or 6.

Zaza didn't remember it at all, but Ander and I were happy to find it owned by the same couple, and utterly unchanged, right down to the owner-ringleader's ponytail and the 'skinned' Elmo in the supply closet.

At the Chicken Dude's Mama's Exhibition

It was odd for me to be on this side of an exhibit, to not be in the back, putting crackers and cheese onto trays, to not be pulling portfolios from flat files for potential buyers.

It was odd for Ander to see these familiar paintings hung on gallery walls with labels and purchase prices, to have adults telling him (and me!) not to get so close.

But it was perfectly natural to have the Chicken Dude tour us around, pointing out repeating motifs (the little porcelain pig and plastic-faced plush bunny toy from their house, and his own face, again and again), and telling us little stories about his mother's inspiration and process.

"Truly dedicated accordion enthusiasts start piano lessons in the spring time. Which is now. Just saying."*

*Actual get-off-your-tush-and-make-it-happen message from the Magical Ms. L., whose hand is visible in the photos above.

Aliza had a lesson too, but I was caught "lurking" and didn't take any pictures.

(Why yes, Grandma and Poppy did give us the keyboard for Christmas in 2009.  I just needed a piano teacher with built-in Robertson-era-Storyopolis kid-cred to fall in my lap in order to get the actual lessons going...)

Jog-a-Thon 2011: Go, Zaza!

I got Ander out of class, and he cheered her on and threw water on her (per her request) whenever she passed by.

Jog-a-Thon 2011: Go, Ander!

So much better than last year.

At Their School

  • In the stairwell: the quilt made from the handprints and signatures of the very first kindergarten and first grade classes.
  • Ander's 4th grade class visits the Shel Silverstein web site during a poetry lesson (they also watched two different animated interpretations of "Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening").

Three Hours Later

(Bringing to mind, her:)

New Haircut (More Tatou Than Hepburn, and 100% 'Za)

Per her request:
  • "up to my cheeks"
and
  • "not in the way when I run or draw"

This is its curliest, post-spritz-of-water form.  (Today it was more tousled and piece-y, and the bangs were spiky.)
